Driver's Licence Renewal: Online Booking & Costs (2025)

By MoneyToday Team • Dec 16, 2024 • 5 min read

The days of camping outside a DLTC (Driver's Licence Testing Centre) at 4am are—thankfully—mostly over.

With the introduction of the NaTIS online booking system, renewing your card has become more structured, though still confusing. This guide breaks down exactly how to book, what it costs in 2025, and how to use the "Eye Test Shortcut" to save hours of queueing.

What does it cost? (2025)

Costs vary slightly by province. Be prepared to pay by Card only at most DLTCs (Cash is often refused to prevent corruption).

ItemCost (Estimate)Notes
Renewal Fee (Gauteng)R228.00Valid for 5 years
Renewal Fee (Cape Town)R140.00Cheaper in Western Cape
Temporary Licence~R90.00Only needed if expired

Step-by-Step Renewal Guide

1

Visit an Optometrist (Optional but Recommended)

Most DLTC queues are caused by the eye test machines. You can skip this by getting an eye test at Spec-Savers or any optometrist. Ask for the "DLTC Certificate". It costs a small fee (or is free with some medical aids) but saves hours.

2

Book on NaTIS

Go to online.natis.gov.za. Select "Book Slot for DL Card Renewal".

Tip: Slots are usually released at 8am or 4pm. If you see "0 Slots", keep refreshing.
3

Visit the DLTC

Take your ID, 2x Black & White photos (though many centres now take digital photos), your current licence, and proof of address. If you brought your optometrist certificate, hand it over to skip the eye test room.

4

Wait & Collect

Processing takes 4-8 weeks. You will get an SMS when it's ready. You can also opt for courier delivery (RTMC service) to avoid going back.

Documents Checklist

  • Original ID Document
  • Copy of ID
  • Current Driver's Licence
  • Proof of Residence (Utility Bill)
  • Optometrist Certificate (If applicable)
  • Booking Confirmation (Printed/Phone)

Beware of "Runners"

Outside many licensing departments, people will offer to "speed up the queue" or "do the renewal for you" for a fee.

Do not give them your documents or money. You must be physically present for fingerprints (fingerprint verification is mandatory). Third parties cannot do renewals on your behalf.
