Loans for Blacklisted People in SA

"Blacklisted" isn't a real list β€” it's shorthand for adverse listings on your credit profile. Here's what's actually possible and what's almost always a scam.

Important

This article is for information only and is not financial advice. Borrowing money is a serious commitment β€” make sure you understand the total cost of credit, including interest, initiation fees, monthly admin fees, and credit life insurance. Only borrow from credit providers registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR). MoneyToday is not a credit provider and does not arrange loans on your behalf.

First β€” find out where you stand

Pull a free credit report before you apply for any new credit. Most "blacklisted" people are surprised by what's actually on (or off) their record.

  • Β· TransUnion: mycredithealth.co.za
  • Β· Experian: mycredit.co.za
  • Β· MyCreditCheck (free SMS): SMS your ID number to 33688

What kinds of loans you may qualify for

Secured personal loan

A loan against your paid-off car or property. Credit history matters less because the lender has collateral. Be careful β€” defaulting means losing the asset.

Debt consolidation loan

Folds multiple debts into one larger loan with one repayment. Sensible if it lowers your total monthly outgoings β€” and if you don't take on more credit afterwards.

Pawn loan (Cash Crusaders / Cash Converters)

Cash against an asset (jewellery, tools, electronics). No credit check. Short term (1–6 months) and high cost β€” pay it back or lose the item.

Salary advance

If your employer uses Floatpays, Paymenow, Jem or similar, you can draw down already-earned wages at little or no cost. Usually no credit check.

Almost always a scam

  • Β· Anyone advertising "blacklisted loans β€” no paperwork required"
  • Β· Anyone asking for a deposit, "insurance" or "transfer fee" before payout
  • Β· WhatsApp-only lenders with no website and no NCR number
  • Β· "We pay R200,000 in 5 minutes β€” apply now" cold-call texts

Legitimate NCR-registered lenders like Capfin (the PEP loan) never charge an upfront fee β€” any "PEP loan" demanding payment before payout is a scam.

If you're already drowning β€” debt review

If your minimum repayments exceed your take-home pay, taking on more credit makes the problem worse. Under the National Credit Act you can apply for debt review through an NCR-registered debt counsellor (NCRDC number, verifiable at ncr.org.za).

  • Counsellor restructures your debt over a longer term at lower instalments.
  • Creditors cannot legally take collection action while you are under review.
  • Once your debts are settled you receive a Clearance Certificate and the flag is removed.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really a "blacklist" in South Africa?+
No. The credit bureaus keep a payment-profile history, not a blacklist. "Blacklisted" is everyday shorthand for having serious adverse listings: judgments, administration orders, defaults or debt review.
Can I get a loan if I am blacklisted?+
Some specialist lenders consider applications with adverse listings, but only if you can prove income and affordability. Secured loans (against a car or asset) and credit-card consolidation are usually more accessible than fresh unsecured credit.
How do I check if I am blacklisted?+
You're entitled to one free credit report per bureau per year. Pull yours from TransUnion (mycredithealth.co.za), Experian (mycredit.co.za) or MyCreditCheck β€” they'll show every adverse listing in your name.
How long does a bad listing stay on my record?+
Judgments stay 5 years (or until paid + applied for rescission). Default listings stay 1–2 years after settlement. Debt review flag stays until you receive a Clearance Certificate.
