Absa CashSend Reversal: Cancel Online or in ChatWallet

An unredeemed Absa CashSend can be managed in Online Banking or cancelled in ChatWallet. In ChatWallet, open My transactions → Manage CashSends → Unredeemed, select the payment and choose Cancel.

Updated By Naledi van der Merwe Fact-checked

Quick answer: choose the current status

Listed as unredeemed: cancel it in ChatWallet or manage it in Absa Online Banking now.
SMS missing or payout fails: resend the withdrawal code from the unredeemed transaction. If the ATM did not dispense cash, note the ATM number and call the relevant Absa help line.
Already redeemed: self-service cancellation is no longer available. Contact the recipient, or report suspected fraud to Absa and SAPS.

Absa Cellphone Banking

*120*2272#

Absa documents this code for sending CashSend, not cancelling it. Use Online Banking or ChatWallet for an unredeemed transaction.

If the SMS is missing or withdrawal fails

  • Missing SMS: find the unredeemed transaction in Online Banking and use the withdrawal-code resend option before cancelling and paying for a new send.
  • Transaction missing: do not assume it was paid out. Call CashSend support on 0860 111 123 with the date, amount and cellphone number.
  • ChatWallet ATM failure: if an ATM does not dispense the cash or the item disappears, note the ATM number and call ChatWallet support on 0860 286 286.
  • Wrong number: cancel while it is still listed as unredeemed; after redemption, recovery is not guaranteed.

What the 30-day rule actually says

Absa's personal CashSend page says the transaction is available for 30 days. It does not say on that page when an expired personal CashSend is refunded, or how long a return takes. Do not rely on an automatic refund claim: cancel an unredeemed payment now, or contact CashSend support on 0860 111 123 if it has expired.

If the cash has already been collected

Cancellation is for an unredeemed CashSend. Once collected, your options change:

  • Wrong person: ask the recipient to return the money. Absa cannot guarantee recovery after payout.
  • Scam or unauthorised transaction: call Absa Fraud on 0860 557 557 or +27 11 501 5089 from abroad, preserve the evidence and report it to SAPS.

Fees and a ChatWallet wording trap

  • Absa's public 2026 pricing documents do not list a separate CashSend cancellation fee, but they also do not say the original sending fee is refunded. Do not describe cancellation as free.
  • ChatWallet's FAQ says an ordinary payment cannot be reversed. That does not contradict the separate menu for cancelling an unredeemed CashSend or withdrawal.
  • Use only official numbers: CashSend 0860 111 123, general enquiries 0860 008 600, and fraud 0860 557 557.

Capitec works differently

Capitec has no self-service Send Cash cancel button. The sender must call Capitec to request a hold and then collect the cash themselves, or wait for the documented 30-day return. See our Capitec Cash Send reversal guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reverse an Absa CashSend?+
You can cancel an unredeemed CashSend in Absa ChatWallet, or manage an unredeemed transaction in Absa Online Banking. Once the cash has been collected, the self-service cancellation no longer applies.
How do I cancel an Absa CashSend in ChatWallet?+
WhatsApp 086 000 2428, say Hi and enter your ChatWallet PIN. Choose More options, Wallet Options or My transactions, Manage CashSends, Transaction list and Unredeemed. Select the CashSend, open CashSend or Withdrawal options and choose Cancel.
Can I cancel an Absa CashSend with *120*2272#?+
Absa’s current help documents *120*2272# for sending CashSend, not cancelling it. Use Online Banking or ChatWallet for an unredeemed CashSend.
What happens if nobody collects the CashSend?+
Absa’s personal CashSend page says the payment is available for 30 days. It does not state on that page when or whether an expired personal CashSend is automatically returned, so do not promise yourself an automatic refund. Contact Absa if it expires with money outstanding.
Is there a fee to cancel an Absa CashSend?+
Absa’s public 2026 pricing documents do not list a separate CashSend cancellation fee, but they also do not state whether the original sending fee is refunded. Check the confirmation screen or ask Absa rather than relying on a fee quoted by a third party.
What if the CashSend SMS did not arrive?+
Do not immediately create another CashSend. Check the unredeemed transaction in Online Banking and use the resend option if available. If the transaction is missing or collection still fails, call the CashSend help line on 0860 111 123.
What if the recipient already withdrew the CashSend?+
The unredeemed-CashSend cancellation is no longer available. Ask the recipient to return the money. For a scam or unauthorised transaction, call Absa Fraud on 0860 557 557, or +27 11 501 5089 from outside South Africa, and report it to SAPS.
