The National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) is South Africa's official system for managing driver's licences, vehicle registrations, and roadworthy certificates. Instead of waiting in long queues at your local DLTC (Driving Licence Testing Centre), you can now book many services online.

This guide covers everything you need to know about booking licence services through the NaTIS online portal, including which services are available, how to register, and tips for finding available slots.

Services You Can Book Online

Driver's Licence Renewal

Renew your driver's licence card before or after expiry. No driving test required.

Learner's Licence Test

Book your K53 theory test for Code 8 (car), Code 10 (truck), or Code 14 (articulated).

Driving Licence Test

Book your practical driving test. You must have a valid learner's licence.

Vehicle Registration

Register a new vehicle, change ownership, or get licence disc renewals (some provinces).

Note: Not all services are available online in every province. Some DLTCs still require walk-in bookings.

Smaller towns often have more availability than busy centres like Randburg or Centurion.

Check midweek dates

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday slots are less popular than Mondays and Fridays.

Book 90 days ahead

Don't wait until the last minute. Plan ahead for the best selection of dates.

Check for cancellations

Common NaTIS Problems & Solutions

"No slots available"

Keep checking daily, especially early morning. Try different DLTCs or dates further in the future. Slots become available when others cancel.

"System is offline" or slow loading

The NaTIS website can be unreliable during peak hours. Try early morning (before 7am) or late evening. Clear your browser cache and try again.

"ID not found on system"

Your ID may not be linked to NaTIS yet. Visit your local DLTC in person to register your details on the system first.

Forgot booking reference

Log into your NaTIS account to view your bookings. Check your email and SMS for the original confirmation.

Beware of Scam Websites

Only use the official NaTIS website: online.natis.gov.za

Scammers create fake booking sites to steal your money and personal information. Never pay for a booking through a third-party website or someone offering to "guarantee" you a slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew my licence if it's already expired?

Yes. You can renew an expired driver's licence without taking a new test. However, driving with an expired licence is illegal and you could be fined.

How long does the new licence card take?

Typically 4-8 weeks, but it can take longer. You'll receive a temporary licence valid for 6 months while you wait. Some DLTCs offer delivery to your door for an extra fee.

Can I cancel or reschedule my booking?

Yes, log into your NaTIS account and go to "My Bookings" to cancel or change your appointment. Do this at least 24 hours before your scheduled time.

What if I fail my learner's or driver's test?

You can rebook immediately, but there's usually a waiting period (7 days for learner's, varies for driving test). You'll need to pay the full fee again.

Can I book for someone else?

No. Each person must register their own NaTIS account using their ID number. You cannot make bookings on behalf of others.
