MTN Uncapped & Router Wi-Fi Deals (2025 Guide)
By MoneyToday Team • Dec 14, 2024 • 6 min read
Finding the right home internet in South Africa can be confusing. Fibre is best, but not everyone has coverage. That's where Fixed LTE and 5G come in.
MTN currently offers some of the most competitive "plug-and-play" Wi-Fi deals, especially with their "MyTown" offers starting as low as R249. But what is the difference between Uncapped 5G and Fixed LTE? And is "Uncapped" really uncapped?
Understanding the Options
1. Fixed LTE
Uses standard 4G towers but locked to your home address.
2. 5G Home
Blazing fast speeds (often faster than fibre). Needs 5G coverage.
3. MyTown
Specific discounted LTE deals for specific townships and suburbs.
| Package Name | Price (PM) | Speed | FUP (Fair Usage) |
|---|---|---|---|
| MyTown Fixed LTE | R249 - R299 | ~10 Mbps | Uncapped (Throttles after 400GB) |
| Home Uncapped LTE | R499 | ~20 Mbps | Uncapped (Throttles after 1TB) |
| Uncapped 5G Standard | R699 | 50 Mbps+ | Uncapped (Throttles after 2TB) |
| Uncapped 5G Pro | R999 | Max Speed | Truly Uncapped (Very high FUP) |
Do I get a free router?
SIM-Only (Month-to-Month)
If you already have a router (e.g., Huawei B535 or ZTE), you can just take the SIM card.
- Cancel anytime
- Must buy own router (~R1,500)
Contract (24 Months)
Includes a high-quality 4G or 5G router for "free".
- Free Router included
- Locked in for 2 years
The FUP (Fair Usage Policy) Trap
"Uncapped" does not always mean unlimited speed forever.
Most MTN Uncapped deals have a "Soft Cap". For example, on the R499 LTE plan, once you hit 1TB (1,000GB) of usage in a month, your speed will throttle down to 1 Mbps for the rest of the month.
1TB is a lot (about 300 hours of HD Netflix), so most users won't hit it. But if you download massive games or 4K movies daily, be aware.
How to get these deals
Check Coverage
Go to the MTN coverage map online. Zoom in to your house. Ensure you are in a "Fixed LTE" or "5G" zone. MyTown deals are strictly geo-locked.
RICA Documents
You will need your ID and Proof of Residence (Utility bill or Bank statement) when the courier delivers the SIM/Router.
Supersonic vs MTN
You can buy these directly from MTN or via Supersonic (MTN's ISP arm). Prices are usually identical, but Supersonic support is often rated better.
