What the headline figures don\'t show

· PAYE eats a third or more. Top earners hit the 45% marginal bracket above R1.88m a year. A R480,000/month gross translates to roughly R290,000 net after tax.
· Career length is short. The average PSL career runs 8–10 years. Two-thirds of players retire before age 35.
· Few players save sensibly. Industry surveys consistently find more than half of ex-pros experience financial stress within five years of retirement. SAFPU and the PSL Players' Union run financial-literacy programmes specifically because of this.
· Bonuses are volatile. Win bonuses depend on results, cup runs and CAF qualification. A bad season can mean a 30%+ pay cut.
· Endorsement income is capped. Only the top 3–5 names at a club land Adidas, Nike or Puma boot deals. For everyone else, sponsorship income is negligible.

Use a TFSA every year

Property: buy and hold, don't leverage

Many ex-pros are caught out by interest rate cycles on heavily-bonded properties. Cash-down or low-LTV purchases survive a career-ending injury; over-leveraged ones don't.
