Frequently Asked Questions

When do I become eligible for the Old Age Grant?

You can apply from age 60. Apply a few months before your 60th birthday to ensure payments start on time. You cannot receive both the Disability Grant and Old Age Grant - you'll be moved to Old Age Grant at 60.

Can I receive the grant if I have a private pension?

Yes, if your total income (including pension) falls below the means test threshold (R8,070/month for singles). Private pension income is counted in the means test, so you may receive a reduced grant.

My payment didn't arrive - what should I do?

Wait 2-3 business days after the payment date. If still not received, check your status on the SASSA website or WhatsApp. If there's an issue, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID.

Can I apply online for the Old Age Grant?

No, the Old Age Grant requires an in-person application at a SASSA office. This is because biometric data (fingerprints and photo) must be captured. Only the SRD R370 grant can be applied for online.

How long is my Old Age Grant valid?

The Old Age Grant is valid for life as long as you meet eligibility requirements. SASSA may conduct periodic reviews to verify your circumstances. Report any changes (address, marital status, income) to SASSA.

Can my spouse/child collect my grant for me?

Yes, you can appoint a procurator (authorized person) to collect on your behalf if you're unable to. This requires completing forms at the SASSA office and the procurator must bring their ID and your SASSA card.
