Frequently asked questions

How much does Discovery Health Medical Scheme cost in 2026?+
The cheapest plan, Active Smart (new for 2026), starts at R1,350/month for the main member and has been frozen at a 0% increase for 2026. KeyCare Plus starts at R1,961 in the lowest income band. New Smart Saver options launched in 2026 at R2,750 (Essential) and R3,350 (Classic). Top-tier Executive plans run R10,000-R15,000+/month. The 2026 weighted average increase across the scheme is 7.2%, deferred to 1 April 2026.
What is Vitality and is it part of Discovery Health Medical Scheme?+
Vitality is a SEPARATE, optional wellness rewards product β€” not part of the medical scheme itself, and priced independently. It rewards healthy behaviour with points that unlock benefits like up to 25% back on HealthyFood at Checkers or Woolworths (plus 50% boost with Discovery Bank = up to 75%), HealthyCare and HealthyBaby rewards (raised from 10% to 25% in 2026), and HealthyCompany corporate wellness. You can be a Discovery Health Medical Scheme member without Vitality, or hold Vitality without DHMS membership.
What is the Discovery Smart Saver plan?+
Smart Saver is a new 2026 plan range targeting young families. Two options: Essential Smart Saver (R2,750/month main member) and Classic Smart Saver (R3,350). Both include hospital cover on the Smart Hospital Network plus a small Medical Savings Account (15% of contributions on Essential, 25% on Classic) for day-to-day spending.
Is Discovery Health Medical Scheme worth it?+
Discovery is the largest SA open scheme with 58% market share β€” strong negotiating power with hospitals and the broadest DSP network. Solvency is comfortably above 30% (vs the 25% statutory minimum). The trade-off: rich plans are expensive, Vitality is optional and time-consuming to maximise, and KeyCare/Smart plans use restricted hospital networks where non-network admissions trigger co-payments.
When does Discovery Health increase its 2026 contribution?+
1 April 2026 (deferred from the usual 1 January). The scheme used its strong reserves to push the increase back three months, saving members approximately R1.5 billion. Weighted average increase is 7.2%; specific plan increases range from 5.1% to 7.9%. Active Smart held at 0%.
